A leading forensic psychiatrist from the United States is visiting the North East to talk to mental health care professionals in Newcastle.
Dr Chinmoy Gulrajani, Yale graduate and program director at the University of Minnesota, is visiting St Nicholas Hospital in Gosforth on Monday 6 June to deliver a lecture on the death penalty and forensic psychiatry
The lecture is being hosted by regional mental health and disability care provider Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (NTW) and will be attended by legal and medical professionals from across the North East.

Prior to taking up his role at the University of Minnesota, Dr Gulrajani was medical director for inpatient behavioural health at Kings County Hospital Centre in Brooklyn and a consultant forensic psychiatrist called by the Supreme Court in New York City. It is expected that he will present anonymised summaries of some of his most interesting cases in criminal trial courts.
The talk will summarise the involvement of psychiatrists in death penalty cases in the USA, covering a history of the penalty in addition to how psychiatrists became involves in death penalty cases.
