The Mother and Baby Unit is a 6 bedded inpatient unit for mothers and their babies. It provides a specialist tertiary service to care for and treat women with moderate to severe mental health problems during pregnancy and in the postnatal period.
We admit women from within the North East of England. Women can be admitted from outside the North East Region, following a referral to the service.
The unit offers a homely atmosphere in which the bonding of a mother and child can continue, while mothers have access to a full range of psychiatric treatment and services appropriate to their needs.
Partners and family members are also encouraged to help care for the mothers and babies.
“Head Up, Heart Strong” is a film created by Devon Partnership NHS Trust for, and with families affected by perinatal mental health problems. It captures the stories of six women who have experienced, and been supported through the most extreme episodes of perinatal depression and post-partum psychosis. The stories can be accessed by clicking here and have been shared to allow people to gain a deeper understanding of perinatal mental health problems and bring hope to sufferers.
